A hard disk enclosure is an external case that encloses a hard disk drive. When a hard disk is put in hard disk enclosure, it becomes an external device, which can be connected to PC or laptop via USB, eSATA or Firewire. Hard disk enclosures are excellent if you want to recycle your old hard disks or you want to recover data from old hard disk.
In market one can get hard disk enclosure with hard disk itself, but if you already have a hard disk (That contains lot of Information), say from your old computer, then you should select enclosures without hard disk, as they will be cheaper.
Hard disks normally come in two sizes 2.5” hard disk (used in Laptop) and 3.5” hard disk(used in desktop) While deciding which enclosure to buy, you must consider the size of hard disk, which needs to be enclosed.
Second thing you must consider before buying hard disk enclosures in type of interface your hard disk has. Is it SATA or IDE? Your enclosure should support the interface of your hard disk.
Depending on the computer / device with which you want to connect hard disk enclosure, you should select connector type, USB, eSATA or Firewire. If in doubt, better to go for multi connector enclosures.
In market enclosures are available with single bay or dual bay chose one depending on whether you want to enclose one hard drive or two.
